An inescapable monument of the resort, located less than 250 metres from our holiday residence, Biarritz casino stands on one of the most beautiful sites in the town, facing onto the Grande Plage. A veritable flagship of the Art Deco style, the plans for the casino were drawn up by local architect Alfred Laulhé. Completed in 1929, the casino was officially opened on 1st August – several weeks before the global stock market crash.
In the early 1990s, the casino was the subject of some controversy between parties who argued that it should be demolished and those who wished to renovate it. Finally, the latter won out and succeeded in having the building classified as a historical monument in 1992. Today, the casino boasts a number of gaming rooms, a bar, several restaurants, reception rooms, a theatre, a swimming pool and a gallery-style promenade along the beach. The arcade area contains over 200 slot machines, as well as a number of poker, roulette and blackjack tables. Shows are also organised at the venue on a regular basis.
